How Does Invisalign Work?

The Invisalign Process

To create your Invisalign aligners, Dr. DeQuattro will first take a 3D impression of your mouth using a digital scanner. This impression will be used to customize your aligners to comfortably fit your mouth. In addition to delivering a perfect fit, the Invisalign software allows Dr. DeQuattro to plan and monitor your unique treatment from beginning to end.

Wearing Your Aligners

To complete your Invisalign treatment, you’ll wear a series of removable aligners that will gradually shift your teeth into place. The number of aligner trays you’ll require will depend on your individual needs, though most patients wear 18 to 30 sets of trays over the course of their treatment. You’ll receive several sets at a time between visits to either our Wakefield or Westerly office.

Each set of aligners is to be worn for two weeks at a time before moving on to the next phase. During this time, you’ll remove the aligners to eat, brush, and floss as you normally would. The thin plastic trays slowly widen your periodontal ligaments, allowing your teeth to loosen and shift into their proper alignment. You’ll be showing off a straighter smile in no time!

Maintaining Your Aligners

Your aligners don’t require any special care to keep them in good condition. Simply remove your aligners before meals and before brushing your teeth. Rinse the aligners before placing them back in your mouth—this will reduce the chance of bacteria accumulating.

When not in use, store your aligners in their trays to prevent contact with any airborne germs. You should also clean your aligners using a soft-bristled toothbrush to ensure they stay in great condition.

Does Invisalign treatment hurt?

While Invisalign lacks the painful metal brackets and wires of braces, you may experience some discomfort when wearing them for the first few weeks. Mild pain is common with this treatment, as your teeth are being gradually guided into their new position.

Any pain you may experience can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications. However, if the discomfort or pain caused by your aligners interferes with your daily life, contact our Westerly office at (401) 596-2264 or our Wakefield office at (401) 783-9890 so we can make sure your treatment is on the right track and help relieve any pain you’ve been feeling.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Invisalign aligners are so widely used because they can straighten teeth up to two times faster than metal braces. The exact timeline of this treatment depends on each patient’s individual needs, but the average completion time of Invisalign is about 12 months. You may even begin to see results in the first few weeks!

Can Invisalign help with jaw pain?

In some cases, Invisalign can help patients suffering from pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Misaligned teeth may be the cause of your TMJ issues, and Invisalign can help reduce that pain by slowly straightening your teeth. Even if your jaw pain isn’t completely cured, you’re likely to notice an improvement.

How do I clean my Invisalign aligner?

A clean Invisalign aligner is a healthy Invisalign aligner…and a BIG part of your treatment!

To clean your Invisaligners:
Wash your hands.
Apply toothpaste and water to your toothbrush and give a good scrub to your aligner with the brush.
Rinse off the aligner with water.
For best results, use this Invisalign cleaning system weekly.
